【Division of Business Administration】
Our curriculum has been developed in conjunction our creative educational methods to increase both the quality and quantity of our classes, so that our students may learn and develop theories and skills that address the progress and transformations of society as well as changes in the industrial, corporate, and business environment. As such, our students acquire fundamental and specialized knowledge in business administration, management informatics, commerce, and accounting. Our curriculum policies for the master’s and doctoral courses are consistent with the respective diploma policies (especially regarding the knowledge and research skills to be acquired), as follows:
〔Master’s Course〕
(1)In order to accommodate the diverse needs of our students, we have four specialized programs based on our undergraduate education: business administration, management informatics, commerce, and accounting. We encourage both the application of established research methods and the cultivation of new research fields, in addition to acquiring a broad range of knowledge by taking classes outside of their specialization. Furthermore, students can take up to eight credits worth of classes in other divisions through our credit transfer system. Our curriculum also supports the needs of international students and working professionals. In this way, students earn a minimum of thirty credits through special lectures and seminars as they prepare their master’s thesis under the guidance of their supervising professor.
(2)Based on our curriculum described in column (3), the minimum of thirty credits comprises eight credits from seminars, two credits from special lectures within the specialized subject (on the seminar field), and at least twenty credits from other special lectures. In this last category, a minimum of six credits must be from classes in the same field as the specialization, to encourage students to take other classes that are closely related to their field of study. Furthermore, by the end of the semester one year prior to completion of the course, students are required to earn a minimum of sixteen credits, including four credits from seminars and two credits from special lectures in their research field out of the requirement explained above. This is to ensure that students will have a sufficient amount of time to complete their master’s thesis.
(3)Students must choose one of the four, above-mentioned specialized programs in our curriculum. Each program has three groups of specialized classes: A) lectures with specialized content (special lectures), B) seminars, and C) special lectures with program names, which are conducted by external scholars (e.g., Business Administration Special Lectures). A fourth group, D) cross-disciplinary classes (e.g., Special Lecture I) is offered as well.
As the academic year progresses, students can take classes outside of their program. Note that Class groups A, B, and C are offered during the first and second years, whereas A and D, which are classes outside of the student’s program, are offered primarily during the second year.
Class group A is comprised of lecture-style classes, and each program has its own specialized theme. The Business Administration Program focuses on the application of business administration. The Management Informatics Program is divided into two fields that each focuses on content regarding management science and informatics. The Commerce Program is divided into distribution, logistics, international business, and finance. Finally, the Accounting Program is divided into fundamental accounting and applied accounting. Class group B is comprised of seminar-style classes that focus on the student’s field of research. Students also receive individual guidance on their master’s thesis from their supervising professor, cultivating the required knowledge and abilities that are specified in the diploma policy, in conjunction with other classes.
Class group C is conducted by external scholars who teach topics that are outside our faculty members’ expertise, enabling students in each program to acquire a broader range of specialized knowledge.
Finally, Class group D is school-mandated and comprised of cross-disciplinary classes on our Division’s four programs, such as Special Lecture I, thus contributing to students’ acquisition of specialized knowledge beyond their fields of research.
〔Doctoral Course〕
(1)Supervising professors support the students in their explorations of their areas of specialization and guide them through the development of their dissertations, to help them understand the level of scholarship on their research area and acquire unique viewpoints to conduct research independently. Students develop the required research skills and qualities outlined in the diploma policy through such research guidance and our doctoral curriculum listed below.
(2)In terms of individual research work, students must earn a minimum of two credits from their dissertation guidance, which is conducted by two faculty members selected by the Division of Business Administration Committee. In addition, students must earn a total of twelve or more credits from their four-credit supervised research guidance, over the course of three years. Finally, students must submit their doctoral dissertation and pass the evaluation and examination.
(3)Students are permitted take the doctoral dissertation guidance class if they have published two or more papers in the graduate students’ university journal or academic journals, if they already have nearly completed dissertations that have been reviewed by their supervising professors. More specifically, the dissertation must have a title, a table of contents, complete chapters, and a list of references that has been polished. However, students can only take this class after the second half of their second year, and they must continue working on their dissertations under the supervision of the faculty members in charge of their research guidance classes. In the Division of Business Administration, the doctoral dissertation guidance is offered as a preliminary screening for the ultimate evaluation.
