Seinan Gakuin is a wonderful university to study abroad at. I had such an unforgettable experience there, and was able to make close connections with not only other international students, but Japanese students and many of my teachers as well! I met my best friend while studying abroad, as well as my Japanese language skill level improved immensely! For this, I am forever grateful. Fukuoka is a wonderful city, and I was able to do many of my extracurriculars that I had regularly done at home in America in Fukuoka as well! The office at Seinan was incredibly helpful in getting international students acclimated— through them I was not only able to find activities to get more involved, but also to get some wonderful opportunities in teaching English to people of all ages! I had the most incredible time in Fukuoka, and I highly encourage you to come and do the same! Fukuoka and Seinan will forever hold a place in my heart, so I invite you to open your heart to Seinan like I did!

Seinan was my first stay abroad and it is still, to date, the best I've had! First, about the university itself. As I couldn't speak Japanese at all, I was somehow worried. But the staff in the International Center helped everyone the best they could for school matters but also for everyday life, and I've never had any problem. Any question you can have will be answered really quickly. The International Center will also keep you updated about events with local schools or groups of Japanese to exchange, most of the time free of charge. That is how I could have a sushi master class with chefs or go to Nagasaki and be shown around by high school students. Then the Seinan students, which have an international group to welcome foreign students, make many events to help with the integration in the university life. Those events are a real key to practice Japanese you learn in class and to be able to improve your level rapidly. For the lessons, you have Japanese classes in the morning, which for myself I could have used some more. And in the afternoon you have cultural classes that you choose with for example the Japanese Cinema class which I enjoyed the most.

Concerning the life around the university, I think Fukuoka is the best city to have a first experience of Japan. The city is big and populated, as you can find most things you want and it is lively (every week you can find festivals or events), but not oppressing or overspread as Tokyo can be. A main subway line goes through the city; the campus is located 20 minutes away from the commercial center and 30 minutes from the airport, which is really convenient. On the other way around you have beautiful beaches 30 minutes away by train, which is enjoyable since Fukuoka is sunny most of the time. The people are really nice and welcoming and you always feel safe and everything is clean, which is a good culture shock! Moreover you will have the opportunity to learn about cultures from all around the globe as many countries participate in the exchange program and even more if you have the chance to live in the International House.
