The chosen subjects of dogmatism are wittily and provocatively enunciated in The Official Politically Correct Dictionary and Handbook (Beardand Cerf,1992). What set out to be a campaign to deal sensitively and respectfully in both word and deed with issues like women's rights, skin pigmentation, age, obesity, chronic illness, homosexuality, incarnation, and many other often taboo subjects, was before long to McCarthy-like overtones in its stridency and intolerance. Thus a professor in California, learning that household pets should be called animal companions, had a sexual-harassment charge filed against him for wondering if the nude models in Penthouse should be called Penthouse animal companions instead of the customary Penthouse pets. Whence political correctness, adopting or supporting such action: Many men now consider themselves to be the victims of political correctness and pluralism that leaves them at a disadvantage in competition for jobs.
