How the Managerial Resources Are Used for Business Management: Deming's wheel for quality control :
  1. Note that the whole process below is influenced by the factors outside the firm (such environmental factors as the yen-dollar exchange rate, the oil price, the stock and land price behavior, the interest rate, and so on).

  2. Two types of managerial resources as classified with regard to time element: Stock and flow types as related to accounting period:
    1. "Stock" resources: those recorded in balance sheet. E.g.: cash, financial asset, total asset, debt, equity; number of workers.
    2. "Flow" resources: those recorded in profit and loss statement. E.g.: sales revenue, R&D cost, net profit; value added.
      • Efficiency achieved by managerial resources
= corporate performance (output)/managerial resources utilized (input),
where both numerator and denominator are to be "flow" data; average "stock" data during the accounting period [= (stock level at beg + stock level at end)/2] is usually used as proxy for the denominator.
      • E.g.
sales revenue (output)/number of workers (input),
net profit (output)/number of workers (input).
